I want my ex to refinance his house and take my name off?

Three years ago, I helped my ex-boyfriend qualify to buy a home. We were supposed to move in together but never did. Now, I have asked him to refinance his home so that my name can be taken off the papers, he has not done anything about it.He's always on time paying the mortgage etc. My big dilema is that I am a single mother and my daughter will be applying for scholarships next year when she will be a senior. This property will show in my credit report and since it is not my primary residence, it will affect her chances of getting financial aid. What else can I do so that this property will not affect my daughter's financial aid process for college.

Explain this to your ex boyfriend and request that he refinance now. Tell him that if he doesn't, you will go to the mortgage company yourself and demand that you be removed. Of course, without a refi, that will not happen, but if they know you are no longer in residence and not willing to remain bound, they may be willing to work out something. If your ex has 3 years of making his payments on time and has maintained good credit, it should be a good time for him to refi the place.Otherwise you'll have to explain with each FAFSA.

You could get a real estate attorney and file for partition. This would take years and cost over $10K but in the end if the judge ruled in your favor, the house would be sold on the courthouse steps and your name would be off the whole thing. It is never a good idea to co-sign anything with someone you are not married to. It never turns out well.Your only other choice is to talk to him and explain this will be a problem for your daughter's financial aid. You might also mention that legally you are entitled to half the equity in that house even if you never put a single penny into it. But you're willing to sign away all those rights if he will just refinance and take your name off.

i don't think it shows up for financial aid b/c my dad owns a house in another state with an ex wife. i had to report his s.s# in my applications and they never asked me about that house b/c that was not the address i put. financial aid is based on income not assets. i got the aide all four years and graduated and not once did it ever come up.just b/c you have a house, it doesnt mean your rich. thats why they will ask your daughter for your last years income. what your saying is people with houses can never get financial aide and you know thats not true. go to a local college and discuss this situation with a finiancial aide advisor who can tell you more about it
